Yo, this is a shout out to Young Carers.

January  was Alzheimers’ Awareness Month and  on January 30th,  we also recognized and raised awareness for Young Caregivers. Many young carers,  defined by Stats Canada as young people between the ages of 15-24,  are helping their family members who are living with dementia. There are many carers who are much younger who also provide support and care to the family but are not part of the larger Stats Canada data….

New Stats Canada Data on Caregivers in Canada

Statistic Canada last week (January 8, 2020) released some data from the 2018 General Social Survey (GSS)on Caregivers in Canada (Cycle 32).  It is based on information obtained from 7664 respondents who provided care to a ‘family member or friend with a long-term health condition, a physical or mental disability or problems related to aging.’ The information is fairly similar to the data from the 2012 General Social Survey although….

Until Death Do Us Part- or until we need provincially funded care in a LTC

Welcome to 2020!  Truly hard to believe that we are in a new decade. Time seems to have flown by.  As I sat down to write this blog, I wanted to start the new year with some good news.  I thought I would update readers about the long awaited spousal unification program.   In fact I blogged about this very topic in January 2017 with the following story: ‘After 70 years….

New Guidelines on Provision of CPR in Hospitals

The case of Wawrzyniak v. Livingstone, 2019 ONSC 4900 (CanLII) is a landmark decision that readers may find interesting. It clarifies physicians’ obligations with respect to the writing of no-CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) orders and the provision of CPR in Ontario hospitals. The decision has led to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) to update their policy addressing end of life care.[i] Until now, the policy from the….

What is the deadliest room in the house?

November is still Falls Prevention Month.  With the rude awakening of last week’s snow and the icy walk I had today with Ziggy, I thought I would share a previous post. Seniors account for over 40 percent of people hospitalized for injuries. At least half will experience minor injuries and 5 to 25 percent will experience a serious injury (i.e. fracture). After a fall, 40 percent of people are ultimately….
